Asthma Care Program
Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lung airways that causes coughing, wheezing, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath. These symptoms are amplified when an individual is exposed to possible triggers, such as pollution, tobacco smoke, factory fumes, cleaning solvents, infections, pollen, certain food items, etc. According to the WHO, India has between 15-20 million asthmatics, with some studies placing that number closer to 30 million people. With 13 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world being in India, it is no surprise that between 10-15% of all Indian children between the ages of 5 and 11 either suffer from wheezing, asthma or severe respiratory allergies. These conditions can be triggered by hazardous gases, pollutants, pollen, mites and weather changes. Only 50% of these children outgrow these conditions, making asthma the most common chronic disorder amongst Indian children.
We at Oxyease use Spirometry, an internationally recognized standard test, to diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory allergies in patients by assessing inhalation, exhalation and rate of exhalation.
Oxyease uses a combination of pharmacotherapy, allergen identification and avoidance, self- management programs, patient counselling to encourage compliance as well as immunotherapy to help patients combat these respiratory conditions. Detailed studies have shown that prolonged use of immunotherapy has helped 40% of chronic asthmatics to stop medication altogether. The use of immunotherapy has also helped in preventing asthma in patients with allergic rhinitis.

Allergy Care Program
Allergies are common ailments that affect between 20-30% of the world’s population. Everyone is born with a set of allergy genes which are hereditary. However, not everyone necessarily succumbs to allergies, since it takes a combination of environmental factors to activate these genes.
Respiratory allergies occur when our body’s immune system starts fighting innocuous proteins such as pollen in the air we breathe. There is a large quantity of microscopic and largely harmless particulate matter in the air. Our immune system should recognize them as such. However, in people born with genes predisposed to allergies, certain environmental factors activate certain genes while deactivating others, leading to clinical manifestations of allergies. This leads to the production of the specific immunoglobulin E to battle these allergens. Therefore, allergies actually increase our body’s resistance to allergens.
Food related allergies occur similarly. While children are more prone to these allergies, they often occur in adults as well. However, it is important to identify whether the allergy is caused by a food product or by an external irritant. For example, some symptoms occur as an allergic reaction to pollen from plants which reacts adversely with certain raw foods.
Allergies are easily identifiable, thanks to certain telltale symptoms such as regular bouts of coughing, sneezing, build-up of phlegm, breathlessness, rashes, itchy skin, a runny nose, loose bowels and burning eyes. Pinpointing the actual cause of an allergy is done by conducting a Skin Prick Test, where the suspected allergen is introduced to the body via a superficial scratch. If the person is indeed allergic to that allergen, a small swelling akin to a mosquito bite will occur and will be present for around an hour. Once the cause of an allergy is identified, it becomes easy to not only medically treat specific clinical symptoms, but also to identify an individual’s “allergy threshold” and control the presence of allergens. This approach can often lead to the tapering down of the amount of medication needed, and eventually, cessation of medical dependency altogether.
Oxyease offers India’s first multicenter allergy and respiratory care program which has been created by leading pulmonologists and allergy specialists who have extensive experience practicing both in India and abroad. The most important aspect of this program is empowering patients with key information in a manner that is easily understandable.
The Oxyease program focusses on first identifying whether an individual is atopic (easily susceptible to allergies) or not and understanding the severity of an allergy. Then, after isolating the responsible allergens and their allied triggers, key management strategies are implemented via the use of medication, immunotherapy and allergen avoidance. Oxyease uses an app to help manage medication schedules, periodic check-ups and personal health assessments with the end goal being a return to normalcy and reduced dependency on medication.
This program has had successful field trials at our Mysore facilities and is now available nationwide via Oxyease Centers and Oxyease Support Clinics.
